Mahua Moitra: When it comes to elections in our country, the voice of every citizen is important. But recently, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has raised questions on a process of the Election Commission, which can affect the voting rights of crores of people.
Special amendment started in Bihar, violation of democratic rights
The Election Commission has started the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in Bihar, about which Mahua Moitra says that it is a conspiracy to end the voting rights of the poor and migrant laborers. She claimed that through this process, work is being done at the behest of the ruling BJP and it is a well-thought-out strategy so that many lakhs of people are deprived of voting.
This process is against the Constitution Mahua Moitra
Mahua Moitra clearly said in her statement that this process violates Articles 14, 19 and 21 of the Indian Constitution as well as Articles 3, 325 and 326. It is also against the Representation of People’s Act 1960 and Registration of Electors Rules. She also said that this process is not going to be limited to Bihar only, but soon it is planned to implement it in Bengal and other states as well.
The voice of democracy is rising under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee
Mahua Moitra said that Trinamool Congress President Mamata Banerjee had sensed this danger long ago and now the party is raising its voice against it unitedly. She said emotionally that if the names of the poor and hardworking migrant citizens are removed from the voter list, it will hollow out the democratic structure of the country. She has filed a petition on this issue in the Supreme Court and hopes that the judiciary will come forward to protect democracy.
In conclusion, this is not just a matter of one state or one party but of every citizen of a democratic country like India who expects change through their vote. If such processes continue to be implemented without checks and balances, then perhaps the day is not far when democracy will remain only on paper.
